The building's footprint is a square of 65m by 65m, representing the purest form. The usable components of the centre revolve around a central open-to-sky atrium that spans the entire height of the building. This atrium is closed with a translucent dome designed as the dharma chakra, symbolizing the Constitution of India. Throughout the day, the dome casts its shadow on the ground, creating a symbolic connection to the principles of justice and equality.
What sets the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre apart is its dedication to promoting social justice, human rights, and the welfare of society. The building's form and design were carefully crafted to create a world-class institution of national importance. The central atrium, enclosed by the translucent dome, serves as a focal point for the various functions of the centre.
The building's facade follows a modern version of the architectural vocabulary of Lutyens Delhi, blending seamlessly with the surrounding urban precinct. The facade features quarry finish sandstone cladding with a pattern derived from the preamble of the Indian Constitution. This unique design element adds depth and meaning to the building's exterior, reflecting its purpose and significance.
The Dr. Ambedkar International Centre is designed to be a daylit space, with fenestrations protected by louvers and the west face insulated by stone cladding. The use of local materials and sustainable design principles further enhance the building's environmental performance.
The centre is open to the public and houses a convention centre with a capacity of 700, along with two smaller auditoriums, exhibition spaces, and offices. It serves as a hub for multidimensional studies of social justice and provides a platform for discussions and events related to equality and human rights.
The project, which began in July 2015, was completed in January 2018. Throughout the design and construction process, the team faced challenges in obtaining approvals from various departments and convincing the development authorities. However, their perseverance paid off, resulting in a stunning and meaningful architectural achievement.
The Dr. Ambedkar International Centre has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019 in the Construction and Real Estate Projects category. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
